Healthy Hoof Care

Healthy hooves, healthy horse.

Horseback riding is a fun and rewarding activity, but it's important to remember that it's also a responsibility. Part of that responsibility is making sure your horse is healthy and happy, and that includes paying attention to their hooves.

If your horse's hooves are healthy, they should be covered in a soft, spongy material called the digital cushion. This acts as a shock absorber, protecting the feet from concussive forces while riding. The digital cushion is composed of blood vessels, connective tissue, and elastic fibers. It is kept moist by the secretion of a small amount of fluid.

The health of the digital cushion is important for preventing thrush, a painful infection that can develop in horses' hooves. Thrush is caused by bacteria that thrive in wet, dark environments. These bacteria can enter the digital cushion through cracks in the hoof wall or through wounds on the foot. Once inside the digital cushion, the bacteria multiply and release toxins that damage the tissues.

Thrush can be prevented by keeping your horse's hooves clean and dry.

Regular Farrier

If you have a horse, you should schedule your farrier regularly to help maintain their hooves. This is an important part of horse grooming that often gets overlooked.

Your horse's hooves are constantly growing and changing, so it's important to have them trimmed and shaped every few weeks. If you let your horse's hooves grow too long, they can start to crack and break, which can be painful for your horse.

Scheduling regular farrier visits will help keep your horse's hooves healthy and prevent problems down the road. Plus, it's a good excuse to give your horse some extra attention and pampering!

Picking Their Hooves

Horse hooves need to be picked out regularly as part of the grooming process. This is important because it helps to remove any dirt, stones or other objects that could be stuck in the hooves and cause discomfort for the horse. It also helps to keep the hooves clean and free from debris which can lead to infections.

Picking out horse hooves is not a difficult task, but it is one that needs to be done carefully. You will need a hoof pick, which is a tool specifically designed for this job, and a brush. Start by gently brushing the hoof to loosen any dirt or debris that may be clinging to it. Then use the hoof pick to scrape away any remaining dirt or debris from the crevices of the hoof.
